Fatal Punch Prison Sentence 07 Feb 14

An 18-year-old has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for throwing a punch in a St. Cloud alley that killed an MSU-Mankato college student. Jesse Smithers of Sauk Rapids had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Colton Gleason. He was accused of jumping out of a car on September 20th, 2012, and punching Colton Gleason once in the face. Gleason fell backward and hit his head and later died. A plea agreement mandated the sentence for Smithers. If he doesn’t commit any disciplinary offenses in prison he could be released in just over five years. Gleason’s father, John, says no punishment is great enough to bring his son back. Smithers has apologized for what he called a “complete accident.”
