Authorities have released the name of the 55-year-old rural Stewart man found dead Monday morning after his vehicle was stranded in the blizzard Sunday night. Garry Allen Kontz hadn’t been heard from since 11pm Sunday. Authorities received the report that he was missing at around 8:30 Monday morning, and his vehicle was found near the intersection of McLeod County Road 7 and 70th Street south of Stewart. His body was found about 2 miles from the vehicle at just before 11am Monday after around 20 sheriff’s deputies and Stewart firefighters searched the area. Temperatures were in the double-digits below zero at the time. Officials say if your vehicle does get stuck, it’s best to stay in your car for protection. Also when traveling in extreme cold be sure to have along a winter survival kit.
