Explosion Heard Around Fairmont 06 Jan 14

Residents throughout the City of Fairmont reported hearing a loud boom Sunday afternoon, and authorities later determined the explosion was an engine at the city’s power plant backfiring. The Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Association had reportedly started up one of its new engines at the plant at around 4:45pm Sunday, and the engine backfired, causing a loud explosion that was heard throughout Fairmont and even as far away as across the border in Iowa. The backfire apparently caused only minor damage at the power plant, and no one was injured.
