Gov’t Investigates Target Breach 24 Dec 13

The investigation into the massive data breach at Target now includes the US Department of Justice.  Target has confirmed the involvement of federal prosecutors as the number of lawsuits filed against the company continues to grow.  Target’s top attorney took part in a conference call on Monday with state attorneys general from across the US also as they discussed the impact of the cyber-attack that affected around 40-million customers. Debit and credit card information was gathered from transactions between November 27th and December 15th at Target. The company is teaming up with the US Secret Service in its own investigation as well.

The recent security breach at Target stores may soon have US credit card companies changing their card technology. Many countries have done away with the magnetic strip-style credit cards in favor of encrypted digital chip technology. Industry experts are now predicting such changes at the national level, and some think there could well be hearings in Congress. The breach that compromised the credit card and debit card information of as many as 40-million Target customers is still under investigation.  It’s still unclear how the breach occurred and what data the criminals actually got.
