County Board Tables Landfill Issue 18 Dec 13

The Brown County Board Tuesday voted to table the acceptance of 10-thousand cubic yards of contaminated soil from a downtown Mankato project for the Brown County Landfill. Brown County Assistant Planning and Zoning Administrator Desiree Hohenstein says the issue was tabled to allow the county to gather more information after the Board expressed concern over heavy metals in the soil. Brown County officials will be talking to landfill operators around the state in the coming days to see how they best deal with contaminated soil. The issue will be brought back before the county board at the next meeting on the 31st, and they will have a risk analysis complete at that time on how the contaminated soil will affect landfill employees as well as the nearby Cottonwood River.
