A high school teacher with the St. Peter School District has been charged with assault and malicious punishment of a child for allegedly hitting a 17-year-old boy in the head with a backpack. The victim told authorities that he had been feeling ill and tired during class so he put his head down on his desk while the class was viewing a slide show. He says that’s when his teacher, Robert Shoemaker struck him on the head with an 11-pound backpack and began yelling at him. The boy told authorities that after class Shoemaker told him that he had a temper, and was sorry it came to the point where he threw the backpack. The student was apparently later taken to a hospital emergency room with a neck contusion. Shoemaker is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on November 19th.
