The City of Gibbon has a new chief of police as of Wednesday. Longtime Gibbon Police Chief Mike Johnson submitted his resignation to the Gibbon City Council during its recent meeting, and it was accepted. Johnson is retiring as police chief after over 12-years in order to begin a career as an over-the-road trucker. The council voted to elevate Gibbon Police Officer Chris Buerkle to the position of police chief, and he officially began those duties Wednesday. He will serve a 1-year probationary period, and Johnson will continue to serve as a full-time officer during the transitionary period. A search for part-time officers for Gibbon will now begin, and the department will also receive some coverage from the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office.
