Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is reminding voters they can register at the polling place on Election Day today (TUE) in Minnesota. He’s encouraging everyone with races or referendum on the ballot in their community to participate in our democracy by voting. Ritchie says you can check your registration and polling place or view a sample ballot on his website www.mnvotes.org.
More than one in five Minnesota school districts are seeking a property tax increase in today’s election. That’s a typical number for an off-year election, but, the requests come after the state legislature boosted school funding by $485-million last session. The funding increase amounts to a 1.5% boost per-student in each of the next two years, but that’s not enough to keep up with inflation. Much of that state funding increase will go toward implementing mandatory all-day kindergarten programs for many school districts as well.
In the local area this Election Day, along with the schools with referendum questions being put before voters, Nicollet, Springfield, Truman and Wabasso, there are also school board elections for the Belle Plaine, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Central and St. Peter School Districts, and St. Peter has city council and mayoral races. We’ll have an Election 2013 update on 860AM-KNUJ and www.knuj.net at 10pm tonight, or immediately following the Minnesota Wild game.
