A southern Minnesota couple accused of starving their adopted son pleaded guilty to child neglect in Nicollet County Court Monday. Mona and Russell Hauer of rural North Mankato entered Alford Pleas in the case, meaning they maintain their innocence but acknowledge that there is enough evidence to convict them. The boy was 8 years old and weighed less than 35 pounds last October when he was hospitalized. He was about the weight of an average 4-year-old at the time, and told police that he was kept outside for long periods of time and deprived food. Earlier this year, the Hauers had their parental rights to the boy terminated, but were allowed to keep their other three children. Mona Hauer pleaded guilty to a felony-level charge in court Monday, and Russell Hauer to a gross misdemeanor. The plea agreements will reportedly limit their jail time to 60 days. Sentencing is set for November 26th.
