The St. Peter City Council has approved of making changes to the city’s zoning ordinances in order for a possible Birthing Center to be opened in the city. Certified Professional Midwife Erika Urban recently attended a city Planning Commission meeting and expressed her interest in opening a birthing center in St. Peter. The plans are for her to use an existing residence in the former St. Peter Community Hospital block as a location. Birthing centers are licensed by the state of Minnesota, and there are currently four such centers in the state. This would reportedly be the first birthing center outside the Twin Cities metro area. There were no public comments for or against the zoning change at a public hearing earlier this week in St. Peter.
