Officials are warning about the possible effects of an extended government shutdown on the Minnesota economy. State Management and Budget Commissioner Jim Schowalter says that the impact will be minimal if the shutdown is just a few days, but a longer shutdown could have serious consequences. He says if it continues on there very well could be an impact on the state and U.S. economy as thousands of federal employees are furloughed and disruptions and uncertainties continue. The Minnesota WIC office announced on Wednesday that the federal government will extend funding for the Women, Infants and Children program for at least the next few weeks. County public health departments are being told that SNAP food stamp benefits will continue through the month of October as well.
