A former New Ulm Medical Center doctor accused of stealing pain medication from a vulnerable adult at an assisted living facility was convicted of felony theft on Monday and sentenced to 45 days in jail and 10 years of probation. 59-year-old Doctor David Miller pleaded guilty to the charge to avoid a trial, and drug possession charges were dismissed. Doctor Miller was caught by a hidden camera taking pain pills from a patient’s bottle and replacing them with over-the-counter medication. Miller sought treatment for substance abuse in the 1990s, and had also been writing prescriptions to himself using false names. His medical license had been restricted following those allegations, but was reinstated in 2000. In addition to the jail and probation time, he was also fined over $2,000 in court on Monday, and was ordered to speak to Brown, Nicollet, and Watonwan County Drug Courts as well as complete out-patient treatment, amongst other conditions.
