Gov’t Shutdown Affects Ag Economy 09 Oct 13

The federal government shutdown continues to have an increasingly negative effect on several sectors of the Minnesota economy, including agriculture. Livestock Economist Tim Petry says that ranchers are finding it a lot tougher to market livestock without the usual USDA reports. He says auction markets, for instance, are still operating and packers are still running — but it takes a telephone call or onsite visit to find out what’s going on. Petry suggests that producers contact the markets they usually do business with and ask for their recommendations on whether they should hold or sell.
