Joan (Johnson) Baeza, great-granddaughter of the builders of New Ulm’s historic Dakotah Hotel, will serve as Grand Marshal of the city’s 16th German-American Day Parade, a feature of Oktoberfest 2013.
The parade will form at the Glockenspiel at 10:30am on Saturday, October 5, and march off promptly at 11am. It will proceed south on Minnesota Street to Center Street in New Ulm, the most German City in America, where 66% of the citizens are of Germanic ancestry. The Parade is sponsored by the international German-Bohemian Heritage Society.
The public is invited to participate on foot, on horseback or on wheels. Families are urged to make a sign with the family name(s), add the year in which the family arrived in America and/or New Ulm and join in this people’s Parade. Participants are encouraged to wear German costumes, play musical instruments and carry American and German flags.
