A husband and wife from Olivia were killed Sunday night after their vehicle rear-ended a farm implement on Highway 71 in Renville County. 76-year-old Thomas Kopel was driving a Buick LeSabre northbound on 71 when he hit the implement at about 8:45pm. The State Patrol says that the implement was stopped and unoccupied on the shoulder of the highway with its hazard lights on, and that it was about two feet into the lane of traffic. Kopel was flown to North Memorial in Robbinsdale, where he died from his injuries. 74-year-old Carla Kopel was dead at the scene. There were two other passengers in the Kopel vehicle as well, both from Cottage Grove. 54-year-old Allie Cook was taken to Olivia Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 53-year-old Theresa Cook was not injured. There is no information on the owner of the farm implement.
