A final ruling is expected soon in the trial of a man accused of trying to kill his mother at a Nicollet County Park last year. 49-year-old Burton James Ewing Jr was found guilty of attempted murder early last week during phase one of his trial. His defense then set about trying to prove that he was mentally ill when he attacked his mother at Seven Mile Creek County Park and stabbed her more than 20 times. Ewing had a day pass from the Minnesota Security Hospital when the assault occurred. He was put in the state mental hospital for killing his sister in the 1990s. The final arguments on the mental health portion of his latest trial were given on Thursday after an expert deemed Ewing sane during the May 2012 incident at the park south of St. Peter. No court date has been set yet for the official ruling on the case, but it is expected soon..
