The annual “Oscar Sorbel Hometown Hero Award” was given out in the City of Madelia recently during the community’s Younger Brothers Capture weekend. The recipient of the volunteer award this year is Madelia native Traci Henry. The ECFE and Preschool Teacher is active in her community in many ways. She is a member of the Madelia Women of Today, the Community Education Advisory Board, and the Hospital Foundation Board, has participated in the Watonwan County Relay For Life for many years, is active with her church, and is a good neighbor in numerous ways, such as gathering a team of like-minded volunteers when she heard that her neighbor’s house needed to be painted. Traci Henry is the 2013 Oscar Sorbel Hometown Hero. Sorbel was the teenager credited with riding 12 miles to warn the community of the impending arrival of the notorious Younger Brothers Gang in September of 1876, which led to the formation of a posse and the capture of the gang just outside of Madelia.
