The trial of the man accused of attempting to kill his mother at a Nicollet County Park last year is scheduled to get underway today (MON). 49-year-old Burton James Ewing Jr had a day pass from the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter when he allegedly stabbed his mother more than 20 times at Seven Mile Creek County Park south of St. Peter. Witnesses reported the incident, and Ewing was reportedly still stabbing his mother when authorities arrived on the scene. He allegedly stabbed her with both a set of bbq tongs and a steak knife. She was critically wounded, but survived the attack. Ewing beat his sister to death around 15 years ago as well, and was sent to the security hospital in 1998 after being found not guilty by reason of mental illness. During his trial for this latest incident, his defense reportedly intends to plead mental illness again, and will allow the judge to decide the case rather than a jury.
