The St. Peter City Council approved upcoming changes to intersections along Highway 169 following a public hearing Monday night. Several intersections along 169 in the community will be altered next year in an effort to reduce crashes, including Highway 22, Drantell Street, Ritt Street, St. Julien Street, and Union Street. The work will be part of a flood mitigation project being planned for the north end of St. Peter by the Department of Transportation in 2014, but the changes to the intersections will also help lower the number of crashes. Mn/DOT says that over the last 10 years, there have been a total of 37 crashes at the intersection of Highways 169 and 22, and 41 crashes at the 169 intersection with St. Julien Street. Those intersections will be made into “restricted crossing u-turn” intersections next year. The City of St. Peter will be constructing its first roundabout as part of the project as well, at the intersection of Old Minnesota Avenue and St. Julien Street.
