A New London man is facing a Criminal Vehicular Operation charge for a drunk-driving accident late last month that seriously injured a man with ties to the local area. 41-year-old Joseph Clayton Schaeffer of New London allegedly had a blood-alcohol level of more-than .09% when he apparently failed to stop at a stop sign on Main Street in New London and his Chevy pickup struck a motorcycle driven by Michael James Knutson. His parents are James and Wendy Knutson of the Fairfax area. Knutson and his motorcycle were partially pinned under Schaeffer’s truck after the crash, and his left leg was crushed. Doctors are reportedly unsure if they will be able to save it. He was being treated at the St. Cloud Hospital, and a benefit for the father of 3 is being planned for Saturday, September 28th, with more details to come in the near future.
