An 18-year-old soccer player has been charged with second-degree assault in Nicollet County Court after allegedly threatening his coach with a goal stake. The incident occurred last weekend at North Ridge Park in North Mankato. Police responded to a 911 call that a man was threatening people with a sharp object, and Nasir Mohamed Abdalla of North Mankato was arrested. The teen soccer team coach says that Abdalla was a former team member who was kicked off in 2012. He had been allowed to rejoin the team, but was removed again after he tried to fight an opposing player. When the coach told Abdalla he couldn’t play on Saturday, he allegedly pulled a foot-long soccer net stake out of the ground and walked toward the coach while making a stabbing motion, saying he would “butcher” him. Other players pulled Abdalla away. He remains in custody with bail set at $5,000.
