The New Ulm City Council on Tuesday approved a request from the New Ulm Fire Department Relief Association to increase firefighter pension benefits by $400 per-year. The 2 main reasons for the request were retention and recruitment, with the hope being that experienced firefighters will stay on longer and it will be easier to attract qualified new candidates. The New Ulm Fire Department has reportedly not been fully staffed in the past 3 years, which coincides with the most recent increase in benefits. In other business Tuesday, the New Ulm City Council approved a name change for the business formally known as Smokes 4 Less. It will now be called Smokes Plus. The Council had refused to renew the company’s tobacco license until they stopped selling herbal incense products considered to be synthetic marijuana.
