Miami infielder Placido Polanco smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lift the Marlins to a 5-3 win over the Twins at Marlins Park yesterday. Jeff Mathis also hit a two-run shot for Miami, which overcame a 3-0 first-inning deficit. Former Twin Kevin Slowey pitched three shutout innings to get the win in relief as the Marlins swept the two-game interleague series. Scott Diamond allowed four runs in five-plus frames to take the loss for Minnesota. Joe Mauer, Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia all drove in runs in the first for the Twins. Minnesota has lost four-of-five.
Twins Open Homestand Tonight Against Royals
The Twins open up an eight-game homestand tonight against the Kansas City Royals at Target Field. The teams will play four games before the Yankees come to town for four contests against the Twins. Alex Deduno takes the mound tonight for Minnesota. He is 3-and-2 with a 3.72 ERA in six starts this season. The Royals will counter with Jeremy Guthrie, who is 7-and-5 with a 4.20 ERA.
