The Brown County Board approved a new tax for county residents on Tuesday. The Board unanimously agreed to impose a new wheelage tax of $10 per-vehicle beginning next year. The tax will apply to the majority of vehicles except motorcycles, trailers and collector vehicles. The 2013 Legislature approved of allowing Minnesota counties to expand their wheelage tax authority. Brown County will raise around $286,000 annually with the new tax, to be used towards road construction projects. The county’s new Five-Year Construction Plan shows an unmet need of nearly $19-million in transportation projects. After deciding to implement the wheelage tax, county commissioners decided to hold off on increasing the county’s Local Option Sales Tax for the time being. That tax hike would have raised over $1.1-million in a year.
