A trial date has been set for the man accused of attempting to stab his mother at a Nicollet County Park while out on a day pass from the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter last year. The trial for 49-year-old Burton James Ewing Jr. is scheduled to get underway on September 9th in Nicollet County Court. The defense reportedly intends to plead mental illness, and will allow the judge to decide the case rather than a jury. Ewing was arrested last May after witnesses reported the stabbing at Seven Mile Creek County Park between Mankato and St. Peter. Ewing was reportedly still stabbing his mother when authorities arrived on the scene. He allegedly stabbed her more than 20 times with both a set of bar-be-que tongs and a steak knife. She was critically wounded, but survived the attack. Ewing beat his sister to death around 15 years ago as well, and was sent to the security hospital in 1998 after being found not guilty by reason of mental illness.
