Local Int’l Science Fair Winners 15 May 13

The I-SWEEP International Science Fair was held this past weekend in Houston, Texas, and 3 local area students won awards for their projects. A total of 17 students from Minnesota made it to the finals of the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad while competing against over 600 students from around 70 different countries. New Ulm Cathedral’s Ellen Roufs received an Honorable Mention for her project “Energy from Mud,” which dealt with creating fuel cells from lake-bottom mud and the bacteria present there. Alexandra Stensvad from Glencoe-Silver Lake earned a Bronze Medal for her project dealing with GMO’s in the food chain, and New Prague High School’s Rena Weis also brought home a Bronze Medal for her project, which examined the impact of biochar on the environment.
