A 22-year-old Hector man was seriously injured Saturday night when he crashed head-on into a Renville County Sheriff’s Department squad car following a car chase with police. Olivia police had been checking on a driving complaint just north of Highway 212 when they located the Chevy Venture driven by Cody Kirgiss at just after 7pm and a pursuit began on westbound 212. The Renville County squad car was parked on eastbound 212 with its emergency lights flashing when Kirgiss reportedly crossed over the median and hit it head-on. His vehicle then rolled and caught on fire, and he suffered serious head trauma and was airlifted to North Memorial in Robbinsdale. The sheriff’s deputy was not in the squad at the time, and was not hurt, and neither was the driver of a third vehicle stopped behind the squad car that it was pushed into. Several area law enforcement agencies assisted at the crash scene.
