NUMC Wrongful Death Lawsuit 24 Apr 13

The jury trial for a wrongful death lawsuit against the New Ulm Medical Center got underway on Monday in Brown County Court. The suit was filed by Karen Buls of Cresco, Iowa, following the death of her husband at the hospital in October of 2006. Veryln Buls had been admitted to the New Ulm Medical Center Emergency Room with an unknown rash in the morning, and was re-admitted that evening, at which time he reportedly collapsed and could not be resuscitated. An autopsy determined the cause of death was an irregular heart beat with underlying coronary artery disease. The wrongful death suit accuses Dr. Dale Bohlke, nurses, and other employees of negligence in the care and treatment of Buls, including failure to perform appropriate follow-up evaluation and testing. Karen Buls is seeking more than $50,000 for the death of her husband, as well as $10,000 for funeral and burial expenses.
