More Charged In Operation Squarehook 16 Apr 13

Department of Natural Resources officials have completed a three-year investigation into the illegal buying and selling of walleye from four Minnesota lakes. Operation Squarehook will likely result in charges against at least 40 people, but DNR Enforcement Director Jim Conrad says it’s not the end of the problem given their manpower limitations, but that lawbreakers are now more aware that these types of crimes are being investigated. Conrad estimates that tens-of-thousands of game fish, mainly walleye, were taken from Leech, Red, Cass and Winnibigoshish lakes over a number of years. He says it’s currently not possible to estimate the effects of the illegal activity on the fish population of the lakes.
