Gustavus traveled to Iowa to compete against some of the best Division III competition in the Midwest over the weekend, and the Gusties had plenty of highlights. The top Gustavus performance in the field events came courtesy of senior Ryan Ness (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley). The thrower has a great showing to win the javelin, putting himself at the top of the MIAC leader board and on the national radar as well with his winning throw. For his performance, Ness was named the first MIAC Men’s Field Athlete-of-the-Week for the 2013 season.
Ness emerged atop a talented field at the Wartburg Outdoor Select meet in Waverly, Iowa, with a javelin throw that traveled 57.53 meters. He was the only one in the field to break 57 meters, with the runner up finishing more than 1.5 meters back and the rest of the field at least six meters behind. Ness now has the top throw in the MIAC in 2013 by more than two full meters, and his distance ranks 33rd in Division III this spring.
This weekend, Ness and his teammates hope to benefit from a home track-and-field advantage, as the Gusties are set to host the Lee Krough Invitational Saturday in St. Peter. Gustavus has a busy month ahead, with five meets on the schedule between now and the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at St. Thomas on May 10-11.
