A 22-year-old Hector man involved in a car chase with police on Highway 212 Saturday night has died from the injuries he received from crashing head-on into a squad car. Cody Kirgiss was airlifted to the Twin Cities after the crash, and died Monday. Olivia police had been checking on a report of Kirgiss driving recklessly in a stolen van when the pursuit began at just after 7pm Saturday. Authorities say that as Kirgiss fled down westbound 212 he crossed over the median and hit the Renville County squad car head-on as the sheriff’s deputy prepared to deploy a tire deflation device in an attempt to stop him. The stolen vehicle then rolled and caught on fire, and Kirgiss suffered serious head trauma. The deputy was not in the squad car at the time of the crash. An Olivia police officer and a Renville County deputy were treated at the Renville County Hospital for smoke and fire extinguisher inhalation and were released.
