New legislation proposed by Democratic State Senator John Hoffman of Champlin would impose a sales tax on bags of snacks in Minnesota. The bill applies to prepackaged snack foods sold in packages no more than eight ounces. The snacks covered by the bill include: potato and corn chips, pretzels, cheese puffs, pork rinds, popped popcorn, nuts and edible seeds, licorice, cookies, cakes, pies, donuts, ice cream novelties and more. The proposal must pass the Senate Taxes Committee by Friday or it will be considered dead.
