Redwood Falls Murder & Arson 05 Feb 13

A Redwood Falls man was charged with murder and arson in court on Monday for allegedly starting a recent fire at a Redwood Falls apartment complex that left one person dead. The fire at the Lakeside Manor Apartment building took place on January 24th, and 72-year-old resident Gene Gilland later died from fire-related causes. The fire displaced the more than 50 residents of the building as well. An investigation by the State Fire Marshall has determined that the fire was intentionally set, and a follow-up investigation by Redwood Falls police and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension led to the arrest of 48-year-old Peter William Warren on Thursday. He appeared in Redwood County Court Monday, and was charged with 2nd and 3rd-degree murder, 2nd-degree manslaughter, and 10 counts of 1st-degree arson. Authorities believe Warren started the fire in a closet in the building’s dining room. The motive is unclear. Unconditional bail is set at $1.5-million.
