The closure of highways around the region Monday night left dozens of people stranded away from home, including the girls basketball team from Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial. Gale-force winds and a dusting of snow combined to create white-out conditions throughout much of Minnesota Monday night, and Mn/DOT closed several area highways, including portions of Highways 14, 15, 4, 19, 71 , and 212. Because of those road closures, the Lady Knights from Lake Crystal was forced to spend the night in Sleepy Eye after the team’s contest against Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s. Some parents were able to book hotel rooms for the night, while other players were hosted by Saint Mary’s families. They were able to return home Tuesday morning. Many motorists were stranded along the Highway 212 corridor after the highway was closed Monday night as well, and shelters were set up in several communities.
