A 72-year-old Janesville man died when his car went through the ice on Lake Elysian Friday afternoon. The Waseca County Sheriff’s Department said it received a 911 call at 1:21 saying that Clifford Coonrad had not appeared for a lunch appointment. The lunch group had gone to Lake Elysian where they had planned to fish and found open water with tracks leading to it. Janesville police as well as fire and rescue squads from Janesville and Waseca and dive teams from Le Sueur and Rice Counties responded and recovered Coonrad’s body around 3:30 pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
