A 57-year-old New Ulm man who was just released from prison on Thursday after multiple criminal sexual conduct convictions 10 years ago was civilly committed in Brown County Court on Monday. John Howard Thuringer was taken into custody by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, one day after his release from prison for criminal sex convictions in 2003 involving 7 and 8-year-old girls. He was set to be placed on 13 years of intensive supervised release, but Brown County Judge Robert Docherty on Monday ruled that Thuringer will spend the next two months at the Moose Lake Correctional Facility. A civil commitment trial will then begin on April 2nd in Brown County. If Thuringer is civilly committed he would then be under the custody of the Department of Human Services.
