The Renville County Drug Take-Back Program collected over 200-pounds of expired and unused medications during the first 8 months of the program last year. That’s in addition to nearly 110 pounds of medication collected in a one-day Drug Take-Back earlier in 2012. Officials say that getting rid of unused medication decreases the change of accidental overdoses by children and may take away the motive for some home burglaries and thefts. Flushing or throwing away unused medication may lead to the active ingredients ending up in the state’s lakes and streams and other water supplies. Residents are encouraged to deposit unused medications in the drop-off box in the Renville County Office Building in Olivia. The box is open 24-hours a day, free of charge, no questions asked. You’re encouraged to leave pills in their original containers, and blacken out or scratch off the patient’s name on bottles.
