Former state lawmaker and longtime Republican activist Allen Quist wants to return to the Minnesota Legislature. Quist announced Friday that he will run for the District 19A House seat being vacated by St. Peter Democrat Terry Morrow, who is resigning next week to take a job in Chicago. Quist served in the state House from 1983 to 1989, and also ran for governor in 1994. He lost to southern Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz this past November. He is the second Republican to formally announce his candidacy for the seat. On Thursday, Jim Golgart of St. Peter announced he is running. Golgart is a retired Army veteran who has worked for Le Sueur County Veterans Service since 2000. Democrats Clark Johnson, Robin Courrier and Karl Johnson are also running for the seat, and Tim Gieseke plans an Independence Party bid. Governor Dayton has not yet set the date for a special election. Republicans will reportedly hold an Endorsement Convention on January 10th.
