No Brown County Tax Break 10 Jan 13

The Brown County Board on Tuesday unanimously denied an economic development tax abatement request for a new agriculture testing facility in New Ulm. Frontier Labs has proposed renovating and expanding a vacant building in the city’s airport industrial park, and last month the New Ulm City Council unanimously approved a property tax abatement proposal for the project. A similar motion was denied by the Brown County Board, however, over concerns that county policy forbids the use of tax dollars to assist a business that would potentially create an unfair competitive advantage. Minnesota Valley Testing Laboratories had argued that the 2 businesses would be direct competitors, while representatives of Frontier Labs have said that the 2 companies differ in many areas.
