A second Democrat has officially announced his candidacy for the District 19A Minnesota House seat being vacated by DFL’er Terry Morrow, and another of the candidates has dropped out of the race. Karl Johnson is a pork farmer who lives outside of North Mankato. He previously served as the President of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association and National Pork Producers Association, and is running as a Democrat. Mankato-area educator Robin Courrier has also announced her bid for the DFL endorsement in the race. Allen Quist of St. Peter is the only Republican that has expressed an interest in running for the seat so far, and Tim Gieseke of rural Nicollet County will likely run as an Independence Party candidate. Jeff Thom of North Mankato announced Wednesday that he will not be running for the seat, after previously considering a run as an Independent as well. Morrow’s last day in the legislature will be Monday. Governor Dayton has until January 12th to set the date for a special election to replace him.
