The Montevideo man accused of stabbing a co-worker to death in early 2012 pleaded guilty to 1st-degree murder on Friday. 25-year-old Darek Nelson admitted to killing 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano on January 13th of last year because he felt she had rejected his romantic advances. The 2 had just completed a shift at the Pizza Ranch Restaurant in Montevideo. Nelson entered the plea before Judge Dwayne Knutsen in Montevideo on Friday, and was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Chippewa County Attorney Dave Gilbertson says he’s glad the Nelson and Lozano families did not have to go through the ordeal of a trial. Additional charges of 2nd-degree murder and 2nd-degree assault against Nelson were dismissed. He declined to speak before his sentencing, but Lozano’s mother, brother and stepfather, and the father of her child all made heartfelt comments.
