Martin Cty Rescinds Contract 17 Jan 13

The Martin County Board was forced to rescind a contract for remodeling the county’s law enforcement center this week after learning that they were in violation of state law. The board had awarded the $94,900 contract to United Builders of Blue Earth for the 8-week project in an effort to keep the job local. But another company, JS Cates Construction of Hamel had bid $900 less than United Builders, and state law requires counties to award jobs to the lowest responsible bidder. The county attorney informed the board that going with a local company instead of the lowest bidder is viewed as favoritism, and Commissioner Dan Schmidtke called it “kind of a dumb law.”
