The Belle Plaine Police Department has been investigating dozens of reports of credit card fraud in recent weeks, but will now be handing the cases over to the United States Secret Service. Belle Plaine authorities have now received over 80 reports of the illegal use of credit and debit cards in the area over the past month, with stolen card numbers being used in numerous other states and foreign countries. Investigators believe that the crimes were committed by a hacker who compromised the card processing services used by affected merchants. The same type of crimes have been reported in St. Peter and Henderson recently as well. Residents are urged to check their accounts daily for unauthorized transactions, and contact your local law enforcement agency immediately if any are found. The crimes will now be investigated by the Secret Service because they have the jurisdictional reach to handle financial crimes in multiple states.
