MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week
Meagan Wanecke, Gustavus
Delafield, Wis. / Kettle Moraine
The Gustavus women’s hockey team remained unbeaten in 2012-13 with another impressive weekend, outscoring Augsburg 8-1 in a two-game MIAC sweep Friday and Saturday. Senior forward Meagan Wanecke (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) was both productive and clutch, netting the game-winner in each win and totaling six points four goals and two assists in the sweep of the Auggies. For her dynamic performance, Wanecke was named the MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
In Friday’s 5-0 win over the Auggies, Wanecke had a hand in four of the five Gustie goals. She scored the Gusties first goal, which ended up being the game-winner, and added another score and two assists for a four-point night. Saturday, Wanecke added two more goals in a 3-1 road win to secure the weekend sweep, again scoring the game winner for Gustavus. This season, the senior’s five goals lead the Gusties and rank fourth in the MIAC, and all five have come in conference play, which is tied for the league lead.
Gustavus has established itself again as one of the top teams in the MIAC and all of Division III. Wanecke and her teammates are undefeated at 7-0 overall, and alone in first place with a 6-0 record and 12 points in conference play. The Gusties are ranked No. 2 in the nation, and have received numerous first-place votes in recent weeks in the national poll. Gustavus will try to stay perfect Saturday when it hosts Bethel for a nonconference showdown at 2 p.m., and will wrap up the 2012 portion of the schedule the following weekend with a non-league series with UW-River Falls.
