A total of 3 area fire departments were on the scene of a barn fire in rural Sleepy Eye for more than 5 hours Wednesday afternoon. Sleepy Eye firefighters were called to the Ben Fischer property on Heritage Road in Brown County’s Home Township at shortly after 1pm. The New Ulm Fire Department was called for mutual aid about 20 minutes later, and the Hanska Fire Department about 10 minutes after that, with both providing tanker and pumper trucks. Firefighters were on the scene until about 6:30pm, and the barn is reportedly a total loss. Around 2 dozen cows were killed in the blaze, along with 20 cow embryos and an unknown number of calves and other equipment. Barn owners Ben and Jenny Fischer were both taken to the hospital to be checked out but officials say they did not suffer any serious injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
