The Nicollet County Board on Tuesday approved a property tax levy for 2013 that is a 3% increase over this year. The county’s $32.3-million budget for next year is a more-than 8% increase over 2012′s budget as well. Nicollet County will use nearly $403,000 of it’s reserve funds in order to keep the tax increase down. Last year the county increased taxes by only 1%, and decreased it’s budget by more-than 5%. County officials say that reductions in state aid to local governments continues to be the primary reason for tax increases. In other business Tuesday, Nicollet County Commissioners approved a just-over $1,000 salary increase for themselves, up to a little more than $27,000 a year. The board chairman will receive an additional $1,500 for position-related duties as well. Nicollet County Attorney Michelle Zehnder Fischer’s salary will go up by over $3,000 to $98,800 annually also, and a 1% cost-of-living wage increase for all county non-union employees was also approved.
