MN Ice Thickness Warning 31 Dec 12

The ice on Minnesota’s lakes is firming up with the cold weather we’ve been having, but DNR officials are urging Minnesotans to still use caution. DNR Spokesperson Kara Owens says that just because the ice is thick enough on one area of a lake, does not mean it is safe across the whoe body of water. She says that 4-inches of clear ice is recommended before walking on the ice, 5-inches is needed for a snowmobile or ATV, 8 to 12-inches for a car or small pickup, and 12 to 15-inches of clear ice is required to support the weight of a medium-sized truck.
