MIAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week

Alissa Tinklenberg, Gustavus
Willmar, Minn. / Willmar

Gustavus had a great weekend at the Jean Freeman Invite at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, thanks largely to a historic performance by star Alissa Tinklenberg (Willmar, Minn.). The Gustie junior broke two school records while finishing in the top three in six different individual events and five relays, finishing first a total of six times. Tinklenberg now holds the top time in the MIAC this season in six individual events and five relays. For her amazing performance, Tinklenberg was named the MIAC Women s Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.

Tinklenberg s big weekend was particularly memorable in the individual medley events. She finished second in the 200-IM (2:08.85) and third in the 400-IM (4:32.23), while setting new school records with her times in both. She finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.90), the 100-yard backstroke (57.27) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.64), with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard freestyle (52.42). She also helped Gustavus win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.06), the 400-yard medley relay (4:00.68) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:36.68) to go along with a second-place finish in the 300-yard freestyle relay (7:55.99) and third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.16).

Tinklenberg and her teammates will enjoy more than month off before returning to the pool for competition, with the 2012 portion of their schedule in the books. Gustavus will resume its season after the calendar flips to 2013, with its first competition scheduled for Jan. 11 at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. The defending MIAC champs have four events on the post-holiday schedule to prepare for the 2013 MIAC Championships.
