A St. James man accused of causing the death of 2 women in a car crash last year is scheduled to be sentenced today (MON) after pleading guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in an Alford Plea. That plea means that 24-year-old Mark Anders Chalin does not admit guilt in the crime, but has acknowledged there is enough evidence to convict him. He was driving with 23-year-old Amber Menezes of Mankato on his lap when he crossed the centerline of Blue Earth County Road 90 and crashed head-on into 35-year-old Jonna Martin of Lakefield. Both Martin and Menezes were killed in the crash, and Chalin suffered a total of 26 broken bones and spent more than a month in the hospital. He reportedly agreed to the plea because he couldn’t remember what happened that night. Prosecutors are asking for a 48-month prison sentence.
