A North Mankato man was killed in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Highway 169 Monday afternoon. The crash occurred just north of Highway 14 at around 4pm. 63-year-old James Hughes was driving a 2003 Jeep Wagon southbound on 169 when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and it jumped the median and hit a northbound Peterbilt semi-truck head-on. Hughes was dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, 61-year-old Dennis Gergen of Alton, Iowa, was taken to the Mankato Mayo Hospital with minor injuries. Northbound 169 was closed for several hours following the crash, and traffic was down to one lane on the southbound side. The State Patrol says that the roadway was icy at the time.
